Like any other piece of prose, there are two classical methods of organizing your data from which you can choose from, when it comes to writing comparisons or contrasts. The first is known as the “Block organization” and the second is known as the “Point organization”.
For the sake of better understanding, let’s take the example of an best essay which helps you find out the differences between an Apple Smartphone and a Samsung Smartphone. So now, if you use the block arrangement, you will have to do the following steps:
1. Write an introduction. Intros are a key to any piece of good writing. Make the reader want to read ahead by stating the theme of the article i.e. comparing and contrasting the two phones.
2. In one paragraph write about the Apple Smartphone and in the very next paragraph, write about the Samsung phone. A good trick is to devote one paragraph to each entity. Note that the order is vital here e.g. If you write about Apple phone’s camera first and then its sound and then its display you’d have to follow the same order in the next paragraph when you write about the Samsung phone.
3. Conclude by giving a summary and what you think is a better choice.
Now, on the other hand, if you intend to follow the point organization; these are the steps that you need to have in mind:
1. The introduction would be the same as in the block organization.
2. Now, you’d list down the differences/similarities between the two phones one by one, in the form of points or bullets or paragraphs; the orientation is your choice.
3. Once you are done with listing down all the points, you’d conclude in the same way by summarizing.
